Icons of Classical Modern Art
Edvard Munch, The kiss IV, 1902.
Estimate: € 120,000/150,000
"The Kiss" is one of the most famous and important motifs in Edvard Munch's artistic oeuvre. This theme exemplifies Munch's final departure from Impressionism and Naturalism in favour of Symbolism.
In his numerous kiss depictions, Edvard Munch increasingly simplifies the shapes. In this last version of the Kiss, he relinquishes all details. Instead, the couple form a dark silhouette placed in front of a grey, undefined background. Munch reduces the inner contours of the heads to the extent that they melt into each other, thus forming a unit that shows the strong emotional bond of the couple.
Emil Nolde, “Meer” (Wave), 1926.
Estimate: € 150,000/200,000
In our sheet, Nolde focuses on a breaking, roaring wave with a light red evening sky above it. The painter describes the excitement and captivation of this force of nature, which he captures in numerous works: "The great, roaring sea remains in its primal state."
Wassily Kandinsky, Title woodcut for the almanac
“Der Blaue Reiter”, 1911.
Estimate: € 30,000/40,000
"The tendency of Blue to deepen is so great that it becomes more intense precisely in deeper tones and has a more characteristic inner effect. The deeper the Blue becomes, the more it calls to the infinite, awakens the longing for the pure and ultimately the supersensible. It is the colour of the sky as we imagine it when we hear the word 'sky'."
